Itinerary planning tips

The lessons we keep relearning, distilled into a checklist — so your next trip starts a few mistakes ahead of where ours did.

01

Anchor, then fill

Lock two or three must-do anchors per destination first, then build the loose days around them. Over-planning every hour is the fastest way to kill a trip — leave space for the unplanned, because that's usually where the best memories hide.

02

One base, many day trips

Changing hotels every night eats half your holiday in transit and check-ins. Pick a hub and radiate outward with day trips. You'll unpack once, settle in, and actually get to know a place instead of just passing through it.

03

Respect the season

Shoulder season is the sweet spot — fewer crowds, kinder prices, and weather usually still on your side. Check what your destination is actually like in your travel month before you book; our Destinations page is built around exactly this.

04

Budget a buffer day

Leave one unplanned day per week. It absorbs delays, illness, weather, or the place you simply didn't want to leave. A rigid itinerary with no slack turns every small hiccup into a cascading problem.

05

Book flights early, fares smartly

Set fare alerts the moment you have rough dates, and stay flexible by a day or two — midweek departures are often noticeably cheaper. Flexibility usually saves more than any clever booking "hack" ever will.

06

Go slow on arrival

Keep day one deliberately light. Jet lag, first-day disorientation and dropped luggage are all real — ease in with a short walk and an early night, and the entire trip flows better from there.

07

Map your days geographically

Group sights by neighbourhood so you're not criss-crossing the city wasting hours in transit. A quick glance at a map before each day, clustering what's near what, can save you a surprising amount of time and energy.

08

Keep copies of everything

Photograph your passport, visas, insurance and bookings, and keep them both offline on your phone and in your email. The five minutes this takes will feel like genius the day something goes missing far from home.
